- Why Class 2? Are you looking for a modem that does not slow Windows
- down while sending a fax?
-
- It has been my experience that sending faxes is only as reliable as
- the phone line and both the sending and receiving fax. Some older
- Sharp fax machines have a hard time accepting a fax from any kind of
- faxmodem. Until the universe of office fax machines is upgraded there
- will always be some that just do not want to work right. I have one
- client who has a new faxmodem in his computer that sometimes will work
- and other times it will not.
-
- You might consider a CAS fax modem. INTEL made the 400i and then sold
- the line to PUREDATA. The 400i can still be found (CDW for one)and it
- works really well under WIN 3.1 and WIN 95 (WIN 95 needs some
- tweaking). The secret is a built in co-processor that does all the
- fax graphics work instead of the motherboard processor. Service class
- 2 is better than class 1 for taking the graphics load off of your
- processor, but I don't think the standard really ever got all that
- much support. There is a Service class 2.0 that is out there and some
- fax programs claim to support it.
-
- For the majority of folks using a plain old Service Class 1 fax on a
- system with a 100 Mhz Pentium works ok. If you are like me and do a
- lot of power faxing several days of the week and don't want to have to
- wait on your WIN 3.1 or WIN 95 screens to work at their normal
- semi-snappy pace then you might want to consider the CAS fax.
-
- PUREDATA has a new 500 out that takes the 400i idea from 14.4 to
- 28.8/33.6. I am currently testing a 500 under WIN 95. They have some
- buggy drivers right now. I cannot recommend that one until the shake
- down cruise is over.
